- LAURITZ MELCHIOR
-
- Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1890, Lauritz Melchior studied singing at that city’s Royal Opera School. He made his operatic début as a baritone, but soon re-studied with Vilhelm Herold and became perhaps the greatest Wagnerian tenor of all time. He was further helped by a mid-career study period with Egon Pollak in Hamburg. He died in California in 1973.
